In ceremony, herbalist Crystal Hamby intends to address wounds related to an abusive childhood, sexual assault, and the loss of her sister to a violent crime. Crystal has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition often linked to trauma. Her therapist believes that participating in ayahuasca ceremonies will be of great benefit to the work they’re doing to transcend these traumas and end her chronic pain. Crystal hopes that working with ayahuasca will allow her to recognize patterns related to her chronic pain and help her resolve the condition.

“I have been feeling called to ayahuasca to help me shed the pain and release the trauma so I can move forward in my life physically and emotionally pain-free,” Crystal says. “I have been getting a feeling that ayahuasca can help repair the damaged parts of my soul and that it might be able to bring all of me back into myself.”

Crystal received a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Herbal Sciences from Bastyr University School of Naturopathic Medicine, where she is an adjunct faculty member in the Botanical Medicine department and the botanical medicine lab coordinator. Her business, Green Blessings, provides herbal counseling and classes, and she is in the process of writing an herbal medicine-making book.

Deeply passionate about expanding her relationship with her plant allies, Crystal is also very interested in learning how ayahuasca is made and administered, and about other medicinal plants indigenous to the Amazon region. She has been interested in participating in ayahuasca ceremony for a number of years; however, it has been vitally important for her to work with shamans who are deeply connected to the medicine. Her dream is to go to the source of the plant medicine, see its native ecosystem, witness how it is prepared, and learn from the people who hold the medicine deep in their souls.

Crystal believes the human body is innately self-healing and, as an herbal practitioner, she provides and teaches people how to make “properly crafted herbal formulas that assist and encourage the body in its effort to a balanced state.”
